N06 Looking after what is left too

After use, some materials are left that need care. Some are radioactive. They do not go in ordinary bins. They need suitable containers and places. Some materials must be kept safely for a very long time. Adults arrange checks and responsibilities for the future too. Caring for people means thinking about what is left as well.

Does the work of caring end when the power station stops?

Care continues after use

  1. Materials left over
  2. Suitable safekeeping
  3. Care over time

The PDF refers to treatment, containers and storage or disposal facilities. Management depends on classification: not every type of waste needs a geological disposal facility, and not every facility involves active monitoring for ever. Storage and a final destination are different stages. Some materials also require heat removal. The proposal must consider resources, responsibilities and decommissioning from the outset.
