The story

Along the olives’ route, the group sees leaves and small twigs take a different path. ‘They are not needed to make oil from the olives,’ the woman in charge explains. Mills may separate them using different systems.

On this visit, the children watch the step from outside and then find it in a diagram. Neri says the term ‘leaf removal’. Leo prefers to remember it like this: ‘Taking out the leaves that ended up among the olives.’

Ada draws two arrows. Rumo notices that cleaning the harvest does not mean taking the leaves off the tree. Their olive tree is still green in the field. Sami continues the fruit’s line towards the next stage.

Let’s talk about it

What is separated from the olives at this stage?

One possible answer

Leaves, twigs and other material that does not belong there are removed. The olives go on to be processed.

A little activity

Our notebook — Follow the two arrows in the picture and point to the one the olives take. There is no need to use real materials.
