The story

In the following days, Neri brings a diagram of the checks to the library. The woman in charge had shown how a sample is prepared: a small part of the oil, collected and identified in the prescribed way. “In the laboratory, people measure characteristics that eyes alone cannot tell us about,” he explains. Leo looks at the picture of the closed container. Ada draws a magnifying glass, then an instrument. Rumo remembers that looking at the colour does not answer every question. Sami asks whether their drawing counts as a check. “It is useful for learning,” Tila replies. “Real analyses need suitable people, instruments and procedures.” “A good aroma alone does not prove everything,” Curiosone explains. “Checking quality and authenticity requires the right checks.” Sami leaves two pictures in the notebook: a nose and instruments. In the notebook, the word quality begins to have more than one window.

Let’s talk about it

Is the colour of oil enough to tell us all its characteristics?

One possible answer

No. Analyses and other checks by competent people using suitable procedures are needed too.

A little activity

Our notebook — Draw something you can observe and a question that needs an expert’s help. Do not open samples used for work.
