Volume I · Scene 30 of 30
The olive mill gate

The story
The transport reaches the olive mill. Tila, Rumo and the children arrive for their arranged visit, following the visitors’ route. The adults at the mill receive the olives and check the information about the load.
Leo looks inside. ‘Will we see the oil now?’ ‘We still have a few steps to follow,’ replies Tila. ‘First, we will make an olive paste,’ Curiosone explains. ‘Then we will separate the oil from the water and the other material.’
Leo looks at the load. ‘Will it all become oil?’ ‘No. Remember the example? If we get fifteen kilos of oil from one hundred kilos of olives, the yield is fifteen per cent. Another harvest can give a different result.’ Ada opens out the whole path they have drawn: nursery, roots, leaves, flowers, fruit, nets and crates.
Sami leaves a new page after the gate. Rumo thinks of the young olive tree still in the grove. It is small, and someone will keep caring for it. Then he points to the blank page. The first journey ends here. The second will begin with a set of scales and a question. Later, at home, everyone tells their parents about the journey. Sami opens the notebook. ‘The oil was already in the olives. But their whole weight does not become oil!’ Ada shows her drawings. Leo smiles. ‘Next time, we will tell you about the olive mill.’
Let’s talk about it
Where do harvested olives go to obtain oil?
One possible answer
They go to the olive mill. There, adults check and process them to separate the oil from the other parts of the fruit. Crushing makes a paste. Then the oil is separated. The olives’ whole weight does not become oil.
A little activity
Our notebook — With help from the pictures, tell three steps of the journey so far. Keep a blank page for the journey inside the olive mill.
