The story

The grower brings a photograph from the year before. It shows a damaged olive and the mark left by an insect. ‘The olive fruit fly can lay an egg inside the fruit. The larva that hatches can eat the flesh of the olive.’

Leo immediately looks at all the insects. ‘Shall we chase them away, then?’ ‘We do not decide just by looking at a little mark,’ Tila replies. ‘We ask someone who knows how to recognise them.’ The grower checks the plants and watches for when problems appear. Sami draws a magnifying glass beside the photograph.

Rumo adds a question, not a verdict. In the olive grove, even something small deserves a careful look before we choose what to do.

Let’s talk about it

What do the adults do when they see a damaged olive?

One possible answer

They try to find out what caused the damage and ask trained people what to do. Insects do not all cause the same damage.

A little activity

Our notebook — Look at the enlarged detail and point to the mark on the fruit. Identifying insects and deciding what to do are jobs for the adults.
