Many different neighbours

Many different neighbours
Olive trees are not the only things living in the grove.
There are other plants, insects and birds.
This variety of life is called biodiversity.
Let’s observe it and learn about it.
@ A.D.O.S. INTERNATIONALThe story
Small plants are flowering beside the path. A ladybird walks along a leaf and a bird flies across the olive grove. Sami would like to count them all, but the bird is already far away. ‘Olive trees are not the only things living here,’ says Tila.
Neri introduces a word: ‘Biodiversity. It means there are different forms of life.’ Ada draws the leaf, the insect and the bird in three separate spaces. Rumo asks whether every animal helps the olive tree. ‘They have different relationships,’ Neri replies. ‘First we observe them and learn to recognise those relationships.’
Leo leaves the ladybird on its branch. He can watch a neighbour without taking it home. There will be room for it in the notebook too.
Let’s talk about it
Are olive trees the only living things in the olive grove?
One possible answer
No. Other plants, insects, birds and many other living things can live there. This variety of life is part of biodiversity.
A little activity
Our notebook — Find three different living things in the picture. Look at them and draw them. Do not collect animals or disturb nests.
