The story

The nursery worker shows two drawings. The first shows an olive cut open. The seed is inside the hard stone. The second shows a little branch with tiny roots. ‘An olive tree can grow from a seed. This young plant, though, grew from a piece of branch prepared at the nursery. It is called a cutting.’ Leo looks for the little branch. ‘Do we just break it off and put it here?’ ‘It needs care and suitable conditions,’ replies the nursery worker. ‘Not every little branch grows roots.’ Sami draws two paths leading to a plant.

Rumo puts his hands behind his back. Today, the branches are staying where they are.

Let’s talk about it

Did the young plant in the story grow from an olive stone?

One possible answer

No. It grew from a cutting, a piece of branch cared for at the nursery. An olive tree can also grow from a seed.

A little activity

Our notebook — Follow the two drawn paths with your finger: seed and cutting. There is no need to collect olive stones or cut little branches.
