The story

From the safe visitors’ route, Leo sees the olives move towards the crusher. He cannot look inside. The woman in charge opens a drawing of the machine instead.

‘Here the fruit is broken up. The flesh and, in this mill, the stones too become a paste.’ Neri calls this step ‘crushing’.

Curiosone points to the diagram. ‘The paste still contains oil, water and solid parts together. Crushing does not give us a bottle of separated oil straight away.’ Rumo looks for the drop of oil on the map. It is still with the other parts of the fruit. Ada draws a whole olive and then a patch of paste. Sami asks whether it is ready for the bread. ‘No,’ replies Tila. ‘We still need to separate the oil.’ The machine’s noise stays on the other side. On the paper, the change becomes clear and quiet.

Let’s talk about it

What do we get from crushing?

One possible answer

We get olive paste. The oil is still mixed with water and solid parts of the fruit.

A little activity

Our notebook — Put two pictures in order: a whole olive and olive paste. Look at the machine only in a picture or from the authorised visitors’ route.
