The pollen’s journey

The pollen’s journey
Pollen is made up of very tiny grains.
In olive trees, it is carried mainly by the wind.
When it reaches a suitable flower,
it can help a new fruit to form.
@ A.D.O.S. INTERNATIONALThe story
A breeze moves the leaves. Sami holds the notebook steady with both hands. Neri shows an enlarged drawing of a flower. ‘Here is the pollen:
very tiny grains. In olive trees, it is mainly the wind that carries them towards other flowers.’ Ada draws a light line between two branches. ‘Like a path in the air?’ ‘We can show it like that in the drawing.’ Leo sees a bee on the low flowers beside the path. ‘Does it have a job too?’ ‘Bees visit many flowers. But for olive trees, we should mainly remember the wind.’ Rumo cannot see those tiny grains flying. He looks at the picture and then at the leafy top.
Some steps need tools and explanations to help us understand them.
Let’s talk about it
What mainly carries the olive tree’s pollen?
One possible answer
The wind carries it. When pollen reaches a suitable flower, it can help a new fruit to form.
A little activity
Our notebook — Draw a line between two flowers to show the pollen’s journey. The line is a diagram, not a real cord in the air.
