Under our feet

Under our feet
The soil is not an empty floor.
There are grains, little stones and bits of leaves.
Tiny living things live here too.
The soil supports the olive tree and gives it water and useful substances.

Sami looks at the ground. ‘It all looks the same.’ Neri brings an enlarged photograph of the soil. They can see grains, little stones, bits of leaves and small spaces. ‘There are tiny living things down here too,’ he explains. Ada looks for the roots in the drawing. The grower points to a clod of earth beside the path. ‘The soil supports the olive tree and gives it water and useful substances.
We must look after it.’ Rumo was about to put a crate on the wet ground. He stops and asks where to put it. Leo looks at the photograph again. Under their feet, there is no empty floor. There is a place full of things to discover.
Let’s talk about it
What does the soil give the olive tree?
One possible answer
It supports the tree and makes water and substances useful for growth available to its roots.
A little activity
Our notebook — Look for a grain, a fallen leaf and a space between the grains in the drawing. You can point to them without digging.
