Volume I · Scene 01 of 30
A drizzle on the bread

The story
At the garden table, Tila drizzles a little olive oil onto the bread. Leo looks at the shiny patch. ‘Where does it come from?’ Rumo points to the bottle. Ada laughs softly. ‘Before the bottle!’ Sami opens the notebook and draws a drop. Tila points to the olive tree beyond the gate. ‘The oil comes from olives, its fruit. But there are many steps between that tree and this slice of bread.’ The parents are sitting beside the children too. Tila prepares small tastes suited to each person, for anyone who would like one. Ada tastes the bread with a little oil and smiles. ‘I want to find out where it comes from!’ Leo prefers to look at the notebook. There is room for his curiosity too. Curiosone sits beside them. ‘I help people understand how the oil is checked and how it reaches the people who buy it,’ he says. Rumo makes room for him. ‘The oil is already inside the fruit,’ adds Curiosone. ‘But there is water and other material in there too. At the olive mill, we separate them.’ Leo is already on his feet. ‘Will we see all the steps today?’ ‘We will need more visits,’ replies Tila. ‘A tree follows the seasons.’ Ada draws a path on the paper. At the start, she puts an olive tree. At the end, the bread. She leaves plenty of space in between.
Let’s talk about it
Which fruit gives us the oil that Tila puts on the bread?
One possible answer
It comes from the olive, the fruit of the olive tree. At the olive mill, the oil is separated from the other parts of the fruit.
A little activity
Our notebook — If you like, draw an olive tree and a slice of bread. Leave a space between them to fill as we read.
