Green even in cool weather

The olive tree stays green even in cool weather.

Its leaves fall and are replaced

little by little, not all at once.

That is why it is called evergreen.

The story

Cool weather arrives. The tree beside the gate has lost many leaves.

The olive tree, though, still has a leafy green top. Leo greets it like a friend he has found again. ‘Do its leaves never fall?’ Tila looks at a leaf already on the ground. ‘Olive leaves fall too, but not all at once. Some stay, and others grow.’ Neri gives a name to what they see:

‘Evergreen.’ Ada colours the olive tree on a page with clouds and scarves.

Sami adds a new leaf and an older one. Rumo checks the young plant. It is still small. The calendar has changed, but it has not magically grown big.

Let’s talk about it

Why is the olive tree called evergreen?

One possible answer

It keeps green leaves throughout the year. It replaces them little by little, without normally becoming completely bare in winter.

A little activity

Our notebook — Find the leafy green top in the cool-weather scene. You can draw the same olive tree in two different seasons.
