Water at the right time

Water at the right time
First, we look at the soil.
An adult decides how much water is needed.
Roots need air too:
too much standing water can harm them.
@ A.D.O.S. INTERNATIONALThe story
After some dry days, the grower checks the ground beside the young plant.
Leo looks at the big garden jug. ‘Shall we pour it all on?’
‘First, we work out how much water it needs,’ replies the grower. ‘Too much can fill the spaces where the roots need air.’ Tila reminds them that an olive tree can cope with some dry periods, but still needs water. A young plant needs attention. Sami draws a drop and leaves an empty box beside it. The adult will decide when to water.
Rumo puts the jug back on the table. Caring for a plant does not mean giving it everything at once. It means observing it and choosing what it needs.
Let’s talk about it
To help an olive tree, should we always pour on lots of water?
One possible answer
No. An adult checks the soil and the plant’s needs. It needs water and air, without harmful waterlogging.
A little activity
Our notebook — Look at the two pictures: soil with a few drops and soil covered in water. Ask the adult how they decide when to water their plants.
